Knowing our olive grove
1. INTRODUCTION / LEGAL FRAMEWORK:
Pópulo Servicios Turísticos and el Museo de la Cultura del Olivo give you the opportunity of knowing the olive grove as a complementary activity of the tourist visit.
“Knowing our olive grove”
It is a program of activities prepared bearing in mind that our province, Jaén, is the largest producer of extra virgin olive oil worldwide. We try to express the value of our natural heritage "the olive tree" as part of our culture and our tradition. It is popularly known as “oro verde” (green gold), one of the main foods of our Mediterranean diet.
The development of the program has been formulated taking into account mainly two objectives proposed in the Decree 230/2007 the 31st of July, whereby it is established management and teaching for Primary Education in Andalucia.
The Article 4 states::
a) Knowing and appreciating natural and cultural heritage and contributing actively to its conservation and its improvement.
b) Knowing and respecting the cultural reality of Andalucía.
And the common goal to all developed stage in the Real Decreto 1513/2006 of 7 December, which establishes the minimum educational statewide:
-. Behaving according to the habits of health.
Suggestive objectives with the aim of achieving basic skills. These include:
c) Authority in the knowledge and interaction with the physical and natural world. This authority will include the ability to understand events, the prediction of the consequences and the activity on the health of people and environmental sustainability.
In addition to the Cultural and Artistic competence, it is the Social and Civic competence, understood as the one that allow us living in society, understanding the social reality of the world in which we live and exercising democratic citizenship.
2. ACTIVITIES:
• “Mill” Breakfast (desayuno molinero).
• Guided visit to el Museo de la Cultura del Olivo.
• Introductory activities to olive oil sampling.
DEVELOPMENT OF THE ACTIVITIES:
Mill Breakfasto
We aim to show to the children that the extra virgin olive oil which they like is simply the juice pressed from the olives. It has many benefits: it is very healthy to the heart, it favour bone growth and calcium absorption, delais ageing… There is nothing better than starting the morning with a healthy breakfast: bread and virgin olive oil, ochíos (mass of bread made up by olive oil, with pepper and salt) and fruit juices.
Guided visit to el Museo de la Cultura del olivo
We will be taught important information about the olive tree, the main tree in the province. We will walk through the garden of varieties in which children can appreciate the differences not only in the shape of its leaves but also in the shape of its fruit trees. We will be shown the old processes of collection and processing of oil, learning the different qualities, its benefits to health and gastronomy.
- Workshop introduction to olive oil tasting
In this workshop it is explained to the students how to do an official tasting olive oil. We will provide all the necessary materials (glasses, pencil, apple, water).We will show them the official tasting sheet and the one adapted to them. We will see the defects (fusty, moldy, rancid, etc.) and positive attributes (fruity, spicy and bitter) of the olive oil checking in what intensity they are presented. We will enumerate the factors that influence the sensory characteristics of oils.
4. CONCLUSION
The main objective of these activities is to focus on the olive oil and the olive tree, the most abundant and representative of our land. We would also like to teach that once the olive oil is squeezed you get a very natural and healthy product: the olive oil.
Knowing the variety native in our province, its flavor and differences with other varieties. Therefore we consider very important treatment of this issue, "Meet our olive grove" because we believe you have to get in value as part of our natural heritage, our culture, our tradition.
